Dare ya

I was resting in bed from our big outing that day. Larry bounced in looking very pleased with himself. “I’ve just performed a miracle,” he said.
“Really?” I replied. “What did you do?”
“I ate one potato chip,” he said.
“And you’re not going to eat any more?” I asked.
“Nope, I closed the bag and put it away.”
“Wow-w-w,” I said. “That is a miracle.”

Adapt as necessary to your situation or suceptiblities. The rule is, to be certifiable as a bona fide miracle you can’t eat the rest of the bag (or the rest of whatever) for at least 24 hours.

Before posting my challenge here, I thought I should try it myself. So last week I did it. I also picked out a comely chip to use as a model for drawing, but I had to put it back in the bag until the next day because I kept sitting there thinking, “It might be, perhaps, more miraculous to eat two chips first, and then not eat any more…or maybe threeThat would be really amazing.”

Larry dubbed it the Power of Positive Self-Deception.

Something to Think About

“I think at the heart of so much poetry...you find...a center, a core, and the core is expressing a gratitude. I mean, there’s nothing to write about except that we’re alive now and we’re going to be dead...I mean, I think that’s the...that’s the...it’s enough to keep one busy.” —Billy Collins
